Meet the Varsity Staff

Coach Jim Bonds - Varsity Football Head Coach

Coach Bonds begins his 19th season at the helm of the Golden Knights football program. In his previous sixteen seasons the Golden Knights have reached the playoffs fifteen times, making the semi-finals five times with an overall record of 125-64. Jim played his high school football at Hart High in Newhall and led his team to the 1986 CIF Championship in the Northwest Conference. He was a two-time All-CIF quarterback earning CIF player of the year as a senior. Jim graduated from UCLA where he played on some outstanding football teams. He spent most of his career as a back-up OB to Troy Aikman and Tommy Maddox. He was named the starting quarterback to begin the 1990 season and later lost the job to Maddox. Jim also played baseball for the Bruins during his junior and senior year and was drafted in the late rounds by the Oakland A’s in the 1991 MLB draft after his junior season. He decided to remain in school to earn his degree and play football his senior year. Coach Bonds and his wife Tricia have been married 24 years and reside in Valencia with their two children James (23), a graduate from USD, and Katie (20), a sophomore at COC.

Coach Joe Monarrez

Coach Joe Monarrez enters his 23st year as receiver coach. An Antelope Valley HS grad, he was All-Golden League as a senior receiver.  At Cal Lutheran University he was All-Western Football Conference as a Senior, leading the team in receptions and setting team records for TDs in a game (3) and season (12). He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in Physical Education. Coach Monarrez also serves as SFHS Director of Admissions and Freshmen Counselor. He resides in Whittier with his family and his son, current Golden Knight Andrew ‘18, is a member of the varsity football team.

Coach Mark Gibbons

Coach Mark Gibbons serves as the Defensive Coordinator. As such, he stresses an aggressive style of defense. On campus, Coach Gibbons teaches Geography and P.E. Now in his 28th year at St. Francis, he lives in Chino with his sons Patrick Ray ‘18 and Jonathan Andrew ‘20.

Coach Ted Corcoran

Coach Ted Corcoran will serve as the offensive line coach for his 12th season at St. Francis.  Prior to coming to St. Francis he was the Head Coach at Chatsworth HS where the team notched a 7-4 record and playoff berth in the Championship Division. Previous to that he was the Head Coach at Alemany HS from 2001-2005. During the 2000 season, Coach Corcoran began his coaching career at Chaminade HS serving as the defensive Coordinator from 1997-1999 where the team won the Mission League in 1998. Coach Corcoran is married to Alycia. They have 4 children, Abigal, Grant, Brenna, and Brady.

Coach Patrick Carroll

Coach Patrick Carroll begins his 14th season as tight end/inside receivers coach after four years as an Administrative Assistant to Coach Bonds. Coach Carroll is a 1984 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and received his B.A. in English from the University of Iowa in 1988. Coach Carroll works at Parsons Corporation as the Sr. Director of Enterprise Content Management. Patrick and his wife, Liz, reside in Valencia and have two boys, Patrick ’11 and John ’15.

Coach Bill Stewart

Coach Bill Stewart enters his 16th year as football coach, 11 years at St. Francis. Prior to St. Francis he was the defensive coordinator at CV HS. Coach Stewart is a graduate from La Canada HS, Glendale College and The University of Arizona. The Wildcats won the Fiesta Bowl shutting out the Miami Hurricanes 29-0. Coach Stewart owns a Farmers Insurance agency located in La Canada. He currently lives in La Crescenta with his wife, Shalini, and sons, Will ‘19 and Charlie (13).

Coach Scott Traver

Coach Scott Traver is in his 16th season coaching at St. Francis High School. Coach Traver coaches the Varsity Linebackers. Previously, he was Head JV Coach for 4 years, winning 2 league titles and a league record of 11-3. A ’97 graduate of St. Francis, he played for then Offensive Coordinator Jim Bonds and Defensive Coordinator Mark Gibbons. He was a Golden Knight Captain in football and baseball. Coach Traver played football at Pasadena CC and received his B.S. degree from the University of La Verne, where he played linebacker and fullback. Coach Traver is a Transportation Broker for the Allen Lund Company and resides in Altadena with his wife, Tracy, daughter, Colleen, and son, James.

Coach Mike Russell

Coach Mike Russell is beginning his 5th year as running back coach for the Golden Knights' football program.  He spent 16 years as an assistant coach at Crespi High School, where he was a part of two CIF Championship teams. While at Crespi, coach Russell was also assistant track coach.  He is now currently head track coach at St. Francis.  Coach Russell attended Ohio State University where he majored in Education.  Mike is also involved in youth sports where he was president for West Valley Eagles Track club for 13 years.  He has taken several teams to the Junior Olympics and brought back many national championships.  Coach Russell currently lives in Simi Valley.

Coach Tony Zarrillo

Coach Tony Zarrillo is now in his 9th season as a member of the St. Francis Football Staff.  This is his first season as a varsity assistant.  Prior to this season, he was the Head JV Coach for 2 years and the Head Freshman Coach for 4 years.  This will be Coach Z's 43rd year coaching high school football.  He was the Head Football Coach at Burbank High School in 1978, and the head coach at Crescenta Valley High School from 2007-2009.  Coach Zarrillo also served as the Head Baseball Coach at CV for 10 years, and was the Athletic Director for 6 years.

During his 37 years as a teacher, Coach Z taught U. S. History, AP U. S. History, American Government, and Physical Education.

Coach Zarrillo graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale and graduated from Whittier College.

He and his wife, Pam, live in Glendale.  They have two children: Philip Cook, 41 (daughter-in-law Kristin) and Kelley Young, 36 (son-in-law Brian).  They have four grandchildren: Philip Cook, 5. and Ayla Cook, 3, and Evan Young, 2 and Tyler Young, 2 months.

Coach Michael Cesta

Coach Michael Cesta enters his 3rd with the varsity program as the defensive backs coach.  Prior to this he coached four seasons on the JV staff as the defensive coordinator. Coach Cesta graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993.  After graduation he served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.  In his professional life, coach Cesta is an information technology vice president for Parsons Corporation where he serves as its Chief Technology Officer. Michael and his wife Marta reside in Santa Clarita with their children Andrew (’15), Sarah, and Nicholas (‘20).
