2010 - 2011 Track season proved to be another exciting one for the books. With stellar performances from a number of young athletes, St. Francis moved up in the ranks of one of the most difficult leagues in the CIF Southern Section.
Led by Captain T.J. Tree ('11), the Golden Knights finished the season 3-3. Hailing from wins over Chaminade, Alemany, and Harvard Westlake, St. Francis took the 4th spot in the stacked Mission League. With losses to the respectable programs of Loyola, Notre Dame, and Crespi, who all went on to place highly in the CIF Divisional Finals, the team had nothing to be discouraged about.
The Knights relied on solid performances from a number of athletes all season. Leading the team in points earned was James Knowles ('12) whose season highlight came at Mission League Finals where he was just edged out for the win in the 110 High Hurdles, Clocking a Sophomore Record time of 15.16 behind Notre Dame's Slater Wayne at 15.14. Knowles also broke the school record in the Decathlon at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational where her finished in 11th with a score of 5391.
Also adding to the mix was Captain T.J. Tree, who despite a sidelining injury just before the season opener, came back to command performances in the hurdles in the late season. In 2011, the Golden Knights will look to Scott Mele ('11), Marshall Tush ('12) and Travonta Herod ('12) to lead the sprinting core. In the field events, look for Kibbey Gosnell ('12) and James Knowles ('12) to raise the bar in the Pole Vault. Knowles also finished strongly in the Pole Vault where he cleared a height of 12'6", just one height away from the provisional qualifier for CIF Prelims. In the jumps, Walker Fitch ('11) is planning his trip to CIF Prelims after narrowly missing a bid for CIF Prelims by just a mere inch.
All and all, the 2011 season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in St. Francis history. We hope to see you out there in March!
