2013 Team Preview
Jim Bonds begins his 14th season leading the Golden Knights football program and yet he can’t wait to take the field. “This has been as long of an off season as I can remember and I am anxious to get things started and see what kind of team we will be in 2013,” said Coach Bonds.
Bonds’ Golden Knights return 14 starters and plenty of game experience that excites him about the potential of this team. “I feel like we have, just across the board, more experience out there,” Bonds said. “Knowing that they have games under their belt and they’ve been there, there’s more confidence, more pep in their step.”
This year’s honorary Golden Knights include Quarterback Ty Gangi, defensive back/wide receiver Kevin Maloof, running back/defensive back Joe Mudie and offensive lineman/defensive lineman Trevor Provencio. “The St. Francis football staff is proud of these four young men” said Coach Bonds. “They are a group of men who have made exceptional contributions to Golden Knights football and St. Francis High School. We are confident that they will provide the leadership needed to have a strong team this season.”
The 2013 schedule features two new nonleague opponents (Chino and Damien) and once again will be a tough test every week. For the first time in 18 years, the season kicks-off with a new opponent as the Golden Knights travel to Chino. Then the Golden Knights are home for three straight weeks to face Righetti, La Mirada and Damien. The Golden Knights then travel across town to take on Monrovia, the three time defending CIF Mid-Valley champion. “It’s a tough non-league schedule featuring very good football teams,” said Coach Bonds whose team is coming off a season in which it went 4-7 with a first round playoff loss.
As always, the Mission League will include some of the best football teams in Southern California. “Everybody looks at Serra and Chaminade, but like last year, the Mission League is going to be extremely tough, no matter whom we play," Bonds said.
The Mission League schedule starts on the road at St. Paul followed by two home games against Cathedral and Harvard Westlake. The season concludes with two straight road games versus defending CIF Champion Serra and CIF runner-up Chaminade.
Coach Bonds says the team is ready for the challenge. “Everyone is optimistic this time of year but we are happy about the work to date and know this team will embrace the challenge beginning at Chino on September 6th.
We expect 2013 to be an exciting season of St. Francis football. Please come out and support the Golden Knights! *Please note that there will be an admission charge for all levels of football competition this year.
