BASKETball - Meet The Coaches
 

HEAD VARSITY COACH

Coach Jeff Stephens begins his third season leading the Golden Knights Basketball program. For the prior 22 years he has supported the La Canada High School basketball program in a variety of roles including Freshman and Junior Varsity head coach and Varsity assistant. During that tenure he was involved with numerous league championships, CIF playoff victories and State Playoff runs. His basic philosophy as a teacher of the sport is to instill discipline and fundamental play through individual accountability and hard work. “It is this style that best prepares the student for life after high school basketball, both on the court and off.” He is a 1982 graduate of La Canada High School and 1987 graduate of the University of Southern California with a B.S. in Business Finance, emphasis in Real Estate. Coach Stephens has been married for 24 years to his wife Michele (FSHA 1983) and they live near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with their four children, Luke 19(SFHS 2009), Sarah 14 (FSHA 2015) John (12) and Hannah (9), l students at St. Bede.
 
CO-HEAD VARSITY COACH
 
Coach Ray O’Brien has previously served for three years as an assistant coach for La Canada High School’s Varsity team. He also was the Freshman head coach for two years at LCHS where his teams posted an overall record of 45-3, winning two Rio Hondo League Championships. Coach O’Brien is active in all aspects of running the Golden Knights basketball program and is the principal architect of the concepts and focus of the teams’ offensive approach to the game. Ray is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and is employed as a business owner. He lives in La Canada with his wife Patty and their three sons. The O’Brien family are active parishioners at St. Bede Church.

ASSISTANT COACHES/HEAD FRESHMEN COACH


Coach Chris Brandt is a volunteer assistant. He played basketball for Crescenta Valley High School, where he was a two year starter at point gurard, and was selected captain his senior year.  He played NCAA Division III basketball for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, where he started as a Freshman and was selected captain, and top defensive player, his senior year. He holds a Master of Public Health degree from Loma Linda University. A very active and driven assistant, Coach Brandt will also help with individual player development in the off-season. He has coached numerous youth basketball teams and clinics in the La Canada area. Chris has been married 22 years to his wife DeDe, and they have two children - Christina (19) a graduate of Flintridge Scacred Heart Academy who is a sophomore at Claremont McKenna College, and Johnny (15), a sophomore at St. Franics
