2017-2018 Golden Knight Tennis Season Preview

The Golden Knights Varsity Tennis squad saw an addition of seven new players last season. Freshmen Alec Barton, Andrew Butier, Arman Manookian, Aidan and Alex Zarrinnam, as well as sophomores Gregory Berberian and Daniel Crump. They joined returning players Shahan Derbedrosian, Ian and Jack Freer, Max Lugo and Nicky Sarkisian. It was a challenging season for Coach Ron Zambrano seeing players out for a few weeks due to injury. The doubles team of Ian and Jack Freer managed to rally and return before season’s end and went all the way to the CIF Boys Doubles Semi Finals in the prestigious 117th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. The brothers then played in the Semi Finals of the CIF Southern Section losing in both instances to the champions. The brothers were named All Area Doubles Team of the Year. Way to go Knights! Ian Freer also made it to the finals of the USTA Southern California Southern Section Boys 16’s Singles Championship where he came in runner-up.   This year’s squad will be missing the talents of Jack Freer and Nicky Sarkisian and will be looking to Shahan Derbedrosian as the only senior to lead them to another successful Mission League season. We look forward to the new Golden Knights from the class of 2021 who should add a diverse set of strengths and depth to the roster.

Go Knights!

Ron Zambrano
