Spanish 1

Two Semesters
Students are introduced to the phonetic system of the Spanish language and are helped to develop oral and aural skills in a classroom environment where English is the primary language of instruction during the first semester, and where Spanish is the primary language of instruction during the second semester. Students are equipped with basic formulas for salutation, questions and answers. A familiarization with the civilization, customs and daily traditions of the Spanish speaking world is expected at the conclusion of the course.

Spanish 2
Two Semesters

The goals of this course are : an increased vocabulary; attainment of a solid grammar usage to the subjunctive mood and conditions; good speaking ability; the ability to comprehend intermediate material; be able to write a creative composition; and a familiarization with the Spanish World culture through audio visual materials.

Spanish 3
Two Semesters
A general review of grammar as well as the development of reading, auditory and oral skills is stressed. Students will acquire comprehension of conversation, enabling them to communicate with native speakers. Upon completion, students should be able to compose expository passages and have the ability to read contemporary Latin American and Spanish writings.

Advanced Placement SpanishLanguage
Two Semesters
Requirement: A grade of "B" or higher in Spanish 3; Approval of Department Chair
This course prepares students for understanding and making themselves understood in a near native degree of accuracy in Spanish conversation. Compositions will be stressed and grammar exercises will help each particular student in order to correct that student's weak area. Short stories are read to develop comprehension and help prepare the student for the AP exam.

Latin 1
Two Semesters
This course familiarizes students with the major conjugational and declensional system of Latin verbs, nouns and adjectives. Students are shown the linguistic similarities and dissimilarities between Latin and English. This course requires students to develop vocabulary usage, translation and memorization skills.
Latin 2
Two Semesters
This course begins with a thorough review of first year Latin. The course teaches form and syntax essential for the reading of Latin literature which consists of simple but interesting excerpts selected from a wide range of Latin authors. The aim of this course is to deepen and widen the student's knowledge of the life, language, and literature of the Romans.
Latin 3
Two Semesters
This course is intended to prepare students to study Latin Literature in all genres. Latin literature and poetry will be read and the form and content of literary works will be analyzed critically, orally and in writing.
Advanced Placement Latin
Two Semesters
This course is designed to give the student continued experience with Latin literature. Latin literature will be read and critically analyzed. Improved translation will be stressed. Focus is on preparation for the AP exam.
