PHILOSOPHY

A true Christian gentleman is a well-rounded person, not only academically developed, but also graced with an appreciation of the arts. To achieve this, each student is required to take an Introduction to Visual & Performing Arts course. Advanced Art, Drama and Mass Media: Television & Film Production are offered as electives.

Introduction to Visual & Performing Arts will provide all students with an appreciation of the history of drama, art and music. Students are exposed to the influences on style, techniques, as well as contributions of master artists in each field. Opportunities to demonstrate abilities in each of the arts prepare students for future advanced study. Students enjoy a new state-of-the-art theater and new classrooms for music and art. With the completion of a 12,000 square foot Degheri Performing Arts Center in September 2002, students are not only exposed to a variety of offerings within the arts, they will gain hands-on experience in a facility that is dedicated entirely to the arts.

The Theater Arts Course emphasizes the development of acting and theatre techniques through the student�s participation in acting projects. Primarily a creative activity, much emphasis is put on the individual's participation in solo and group activities. The course stresses the potential use of theatre skills, as well as the history of theatre in relation to the religious morality, mystery and miracle plays. The Arts Department sponsors at least two productions during the year, a play during the first semester and a musical in the spring.

Students with vocal talent may join the Men's Chorus. The chorus performs in concert, at choral festivals, for liturgical celebrations and for numerous school-related functions during the school year. Members of the chorus also participate in the spring musical production. They often perform jointly with local girls' school choruses.

A studio Art Class with an emphasis on drawing, painting and the use of various media, including an introduction to sculpture, is an elective course for juniors and seniors. Students may also participate in a media production and "daily newscast" program. KNIT-TV offers a hands-on learning experience with television broadcast and production. Students are introduced to the various genres in American television and film. Aside from theory, students also produce, write, edit and direct video productions using non-linear digital editing systems provided by the KNIT studio. Over the last four years, the Visual and Performing Arts Department has sponsored the Festival of the Arts, a week-long celebration which includes a video and film festival, drama competitions, choral concert, drama presentations, musicians showcase, international food fair and art exhibits.

 

 

This course will introduce students to the history of drama, the history of art, and the history of music. In the first semester students will be introduced to the skill of pantomime, improvisation, voice, stage movement, and character analysis. Students will be able to take a second semester of this course in 11th or 12th grade in order to satisfy the UC requirement for Fine Art.

This course offers thorough vocal experience through class instruction. Voice development and part-singing are promoted. Sight reading and musicianship are developed through the performance of choral selections. The chorus performs in concert at choral festivals, for liturgical celebrations, and for numerous school-related functions.

A student's aesthetic abilities are further developed with the analysis of mass media, specifically, television and film in various genres. Thematic and practical approaches are used. Creative and visual skills are enhanced through original writing and actual production (pre-production and post production included using digital editing). This course also includes a survey of the American situation comedy and a survey of American drama for both television and film, and Television News broadcasting.
