College Counseling
The curriculum at St. Francis High School is college preparatory based and the goal of the College Guidance Office is to assure that each student matriculate to a college or university that is a good fit academically, emotionally, and spiritually. Ninety- nine percent of the students at St. Francis attend college, with approximately seventy-five attending four-year institutions and twenty five percent attending community colleges.
Mr. Dan Pelletier and Ms. Mary Lou Rico, are available to upper classmen and their parents. In working with students and parents, in formal and informal conferences, the college guidance counselor meets with students and families to facilitate the college search process, communicates and solves problems throughout the search and application process, writes letters of recommendation for the senior class, and writes a monthly article for Knights and Days, the monthly newsletter sent to St. Francis families. Application workshops are offered to seniors in order to help them fill out the UC and CSU applications, and essay writing and reviewing are held during English classes. In addition, the college guidance counselor plans and coordinates several evening presentations. These include College Knowledge Night for Seniors and their Parents, College Knowledge Nightfor Juniors and their Parents, Creating a College Profile for Freshmen, Sophomores, and their Parents, Financial Aid Night, and Moving On for Senior Parents.
Relationships with Colleges : Visitations by college admission representatives are conducted throughout the fall, and St. Francis hosts an annual College Fair for the San Gabriel Valley, where over eighty colleges throughout the country are represented. A Jesuit College Fair was also held on the St. Francis campus in September. In working with colleges and universities, the college guidance counselor maintains close contact with admissions personnel during all phases of the college admission process, attends professional conferences, and visits a number of colleges and universities each year.
Professional Affiliations: National and Western Associations for College Admission Counseling, the College Board, National Catholic Education Association, Los Angeles Independent Schools College Counselors Association. St. Francis High School is regularly represented at conferences and meetings of these associations. St. Francis High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
College Resources Students and parents are welcome to drop by the College Guidance Office. The resource center is filled with college catalogues, viewbooks, applications, testing materials, financial aid and scholarship information. Computers on campus are available to students to access online resources. A College Planning Handbook is presented to each family at the Senior College Knowledge Night.
Knights and Days, the St. Francis monthly newsletter, gives comprehensive information regarding college including the search and application process, timelines, deadlines, testing information, and other pertinent information. Families are encouraged to read Knights and Days each month.
